Title: Understanding Advisory Inhibition in Airbus Aircraft: A Crucial Aspect of TCAS Operations

Introduction

In the dynamic realm of aviation, safety remains the top priority for pilots and air traffic controllers alike. Among the many systems contributing to the safety of air travel, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) plays a pivotal role in preventing mid-air collisions. Within the framework of TCAS, an essential feature known as Advisory Inhibition becomes a critical consideration for Airbus pilots.

Advisory Inhibition Overview

The Advisory Inhibition protocol, denoted as DSC-34-SURV-60-10 P 10/12, regulates the activation of certain advisories based on the aircraft's altitude. This measure ensures that specific advisories are selectively inhibited under specific altitude conditions, tailoring the system's responses to the current flight phase.

Inhibited Advisories

  1. Intruders Below 380 ft AGL during Climb or Descent Below 1,750 ft AGL (Climb) or 1,650 ft AGL (Descent):
    • Advisories related to intruders flying below 380 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) are inhibited when the own aircraft is climbing below 1,750 feet AGL or descending below 1,650 feet AGL.
  2. TA Aural Messages Below 600 ft AGL (Climb) or 400 ft AGL (Descent):
    • Terrain Avoidance (TA) aural messages are inhibited when the aircraft is climbing below 600 feet AGL or descending below 400 feet AGL.
  3. RA Aural Messages Below 1,100 ft AGL (Climb) or 900 ft AGL (Descent):
    • Resolution Advisory (RA) aural messages are inhibited during climb below 1,100 feet AGL or descent below 900 feet AGL. In such cases, RAs are converted into TA.
  4. "Descend" RA Below 1,200 ft AGL (Climb) or 1,000 ft AGL (Descent):
    • Specific "Descend" RAs are inhibited during climb below 1,200 feet AGL or descent below 1,000 feet AGL.
  5. "Increase Descent" RA Below 1,650 ft AGL (Climb) or 1,450 ft AGL (Descent):
    • RAs instructing an "Increase Descent" are inhibited during climb below 1,650 feet AGL or descent below 1,450 feet AGL.
  6. AP/FD TCAS Flight Guidance Mode Inhibited Below 900 ft:
    • The Autopilot/Flight Director (AP/FD) TCAS flight guidance mode is inhibited when the aircraft is below 900 feet AGL.

Conclusion

Understanding the intricacies of Advisory Inhibition is crucial for Airbus pilots, as it directly influences the TCAS responses during different phases of flight. By tailoring the advisories based on altitude, this protocol enhances the efficiency of the TCAS system, contributing significantly to the overall safety of air travel. Pilots must remain vigilant and well-versed in these nuances to ensure seamless and secure operations in the skies.
